In the world of blockchain, few names stand out as much as Fabian Vogelsteller. Known for his revolutionary work on the ERC20 standard and his role in developing the first Ethereum tools, Vogelsteller has turned his attention to a new challenge: decentralized identity. In this interview, he shares his journey from the early days of Ethereum to the founding of LUKSO, a blockchain platform designed to bring decentralization to the masses.
Fabian Vogelsteller began his journey in the crypto world in 2013 when he discovered Bitcoin. Later, in 2014, he encountered Ethereum and had the opportunity to join its core team in 2015. He was the lead dApp developer, creating the first Web3 browser, called Mist, and key developer tools like Web3.js. In 2015, he proposed the ERC20 standard based on a draft by Vitalik Buterin, which transformed the Ethereum ecosystem and contributed to the development of ICOs, DeFi, NFTs, and more.
In 2018, he co-founded LUKSO with the vision of taking blockchain beyond the financial sector and making it accessible to everyone. His goal is to bring the benefits of decentralization to content creators, artists, businesses, and everyday users. To achieve this, LUKSO has developed a series of smart contract standards, called LSPs, which enable the creation of decentralized digital identities, known as Universal Profiles. These profiles enhance how we interact with the blockchain by providing more sophisticated and functional identities.
Within the Web3 ecosystem, identity remains a challenge. Currently, blockchain accounts function as storage addresses with no associated information. Fabian argues that for decentralized technology to serve as the foundation for a future society, accounts must evolve beyond simple public and private key pairs.
LUKSO's approach is to address identity from a different perspective, focusing on the digital identity we use daily on social media and online games. These digital profiles can grow over time and become valuable assets. Universal Profiles allow users to control their own data and reputation on a decentralized platform without relying on third parties.
The LUKSO team has worked for years to build a secure and innovative infrastructure. This included multiple audits and the development of tools such as a browser extension and mobile applications. With these advances, they aim to make Web3 accessible to a broader audience without sacrificing security or decentralization.
On the other hand, LUKSO's new standards also improve token and NFT management, enabling more dynamic control over digital assets compared to traditional standards like ERC20. Additionally, Universal Profiles facilitate interoperability by being designed to integrate across multiple blockchain networks.
At Q2BSTUDIO, a company specialized in the development and provision of technological services, we view the advancement of standards like those of LUKSO with great interest, as these innovations can redefine the Web3 ecosystem and its mass adoption. We are dedicated to offering technological solutions that enhance digital transformation and believe that decentralized identity will be key in the evolution of the internet.
The future of blockchain will not only be determined by decentralized finance but also by social applications that democratize access to technology. Vogelsteller and his team are driving this vision and laying the groundwork for a new digital era where every user has more control over their online identity.
