At Q2BSTUDIO, we understand that product designers play a crucial role in the technology world. They must not only balance business goals and user needs, but also deal with the technical constraints of developers. For this reason, soft skills are just as important as technical ones.
In my experience, there are four key skills that can make time management and the design process more efficient, allowing for better organization and clearer communication between teams. These skills have been fundamental to my growth as a designer, and I believe they can be very useful for any professional in the field.
Skill #1: Time management with work blocks
One of the main challenges for a designer is the number of unexpected meetings that can disrupt the day's planning. To prevent this from affecting productivity, I recommend scheduling and blocking out time on the calendar instead of just having a to-do list. A calendar works like a time budget, allowing you to clearly visualize how much can be accomplished in a day.
Tips:
- Reserve 20-30 minutes each morning to prioritize design tasks.
- Don't add each task individually; instead, plan focus blocks to group related tasks.
- Reserve one hour for lunch and keep it consistent to avoid interruptions.
- Set specific periods to answer colleagues' questions and avoid unnecessary distractions throughout the day.
Skill #2: Summarizing design meetings
Many design decisions arise from meetings where edge cases are discussed or technical questions are resolved. To ensure information is not lost, it is advisable to summarize each meeting and share it with those involved.
Tips:
- Record all key points that require changes or follow-up.
- Take the initiative in note-taking, which will increase your value within the team.
- End each meeting by summarizing agreements and ensuring everyone is aligned.
- Save summaries in an accessible space, directly linked to design tasks.
Skill #3: Properly documenting design decisions
Every design decision has a reasoning behind it. Without proper documentation, it is easy to forget why a specific determination was made, which can lead to redundancies and wasted time within the team. Therefore, keeping structured records prevents misunderstandings and facilitates future reviews.
Tips:
- For non-obvious decisions, leave comments on the designs about the reasoning behind each choice.
- Attach screenshots or references from previous discussions that led to the final decision.
Skill #4: Periodic review of work
To improve as a designer, it is key to analyze strengths and areas of opportunity in skills such as UX, UI, communication, and decision-making. Reviewing completed work allows you to adjust strategies to improve results and continue professional growth.
Tips:
- Document each completed task and create lists with links to the projects.
- If you work on strategic projects, detail objectives, steps taken, and impact metrics.
At Q2BSTUDIO, we apply these skills to ensure our design process is efficient, clear, and aligned with business objectives and user needs. Intelligent time management, structured documentation, and continuous analysis of our decisions allow us to deliver innovative technological solutions with the highest quality.
