Abstract
As a blockchain-based application, Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) have captured global attention in recent years. Digital art is the primary form of NFT that can be stored on different blockchains. Although the NFT market is developing rapidly, we have observed potential ethical and racial fairness issues in the design of NFT artworks due to the lack of ethical guidelines or censorship. Therefore, we investigated CryptoPunks, the most famous collection in the NFT market, to explore and visualize its potential ethical issues. We analyzed these issues from three perspectives: design, commercial transactions, and related topics on social media. To this end, we collected data using data analysis tools and created visualizations that revealed, for example, that 1.6 times more male punks were created than female punks, and that lighter-skinned punks tend to sell at higher prices. Our findings encourage future exploration of ethical issues in the NFT sector.
Introduction
Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are units of data stored on the blockchain that certify the uniqueness of a digital asset. During the first quarter of 2021, the NFT market reached over $2 billion in transactions, representing a 2000% increase compared to the previous quarter. More and more established companies and artists have joined this market. Many NFT avatar collections are created based on attributes such as gender, skin color, and character accessories. Among them, CryptoPunks is one of the most popular, with over 10,000 unique digital images actively traded.
However, as a relatively new market without clear regulation, ethical issues have arisen in the creation and trading of NFTs. Significant differences in pricing trends based on gender and skin color are evident, and the generation processes of these NFTs, whether algorithmic or manual, are not always transparent.
Methodology
For our study, we collected transaction data from the CryptoPunks blockchain as well as social media posts with at least five interactions on topics related to NFTs and ethics. We used various Python tools to build databases and visualize aspects such as the distribution of CryptoPunk attributes, their sale prices over time, and sentiment analysis of users on social media.
Results
Among our most relevant findings, we identified a significant difference in character generation, with 6,039 male Punks compared to 3,840 female Punks. Likewise, darker-skinned punks were the least represented. In terms of trading, male and light-skinned Punks showed higher transaction value compared to female and dark-skinned ones. Additionally, we observed that most transactions are concentrated among a few actors with high frequency of buying and selling. In the social media analysis, we found that ethical topics related to gender and racial equity in NFTs are rarely discussed.
Conclusion
As the NFT market continues to grow, the need to improve regulation and promote fairness in the development and trading of these digital assets becomes evident. The research conducted demonstrates the existence of inequalities in the design and trading of CryptoPunks and opens the door to future research on ethical issues in blockchain.
