Focus trapping consists of controlling keyboard focus within a user interface element so that it never leaves it while active. In theory it sounds simple, but in practice it has many details to manage: dynamic focusable elements, tab order, shift+tab handling, restoring the original focus, and screen reader compatibility.
To implement it correctly, it is advisable to follow clear steps: identify the focusable elements within the container, add focus sentinels at the beginning and end to recapture focus, intercept the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, semantically hide the rest of the page with aria-hidden when appropriate, and restore focus to the element that had it before closing the modal or panel. It is also essential to handle Escape and clicks outside the component, and to test with keyboard and screen readers to ensure real accessibility.
