Entity Framework is an object-relational mapper for .NET developers that allows working with relational data using domain-specific objects. EF drastically reduces the data access code that developers usually write and makes it easier to focus on entities such as customers and addresses without worrying about the underlying tables and columns.

Usage scenarios: create MVC web applications, define the site's appearance, install Entity Framework 6, design the data model, create the database context, initialize the database with test data, configure EF 6 for LocalDB, and generate controllers and views for CRUD operations.

Key features: Entity Framework is a lightweight and extensible ORM technology that allows adding or removing components according to project needs. It supports multiple platforms such as Windows, Linux, and macOS. It works with relational and non-relational data sources and integrates with popular databases such as SQL Server, SQLite, PostgreSQL, and cloud services. It facilitates create, read, update, and delete operations and improves unit testing thanks to in-memory tables. It allows configuring the model using data annotations or Fluent API and offers migration commands executable from the NuGet Package Manager Console or the command-line interface to manage the database schema.

Development approaches: Code First allows defining models in C# and creating the database from scratch; Model First uses EDMX files to design the model visually before generating the database; Database First generates models and code from an existing database and maintains the connection between the schema and the project classes.

Basic workflow: define domain classes and a context derived from DbContext with its configuration, insert data by adding objects to the context and calling savechanges, read data using LINQ to Entities queries that EF converts to SQL, and edit or delete entities by updating the state and executing savechanges so that EF generates and executes the statements in the database.

Architecture: Entity Framework is made up of several layers that work together to map the domain model to physical storage. Main components: the Entity Data Model EDM, LINQ to Entities for object-based queries, Entity SQL, and the object services layers, the Entity Client provider, and source-specific ADO.NET providers.

Entity Data Model EDM: it consists of three parts. The conceptual model describes entities and relationships independent of the physical schema and represents business objects. The mapping model defines how the conceptual model translates to the storage model and links entities with tables and relationships. The storage model reflects the database schema including tables, views, keys, and stored procedures.

LINQ to Entities: allows writing queries against the object model in C# or other .NET languages; EF translates those queries to SQL for execution in the database. Entity SQL: an entity-oriented query language that is internally converted to SQL statements specific to the database management system.

Object services and providers: the Object Services layer includes the object context that represents the interaction session between the application and the data source and manages add, delete, and persist change operations. The Entity Client provider translates entity-level expressions into commands for the underlying ADO.NET provider. Specific ADO.NET providers abstract the connection and execution over each DBMS and allow EF to translate LINQ expressions into the system's native SQL.

Best practices: design domain-oriented models, take advantage of migrations to version the schema, use parameterized queries, and optimize performance with lazy loading and explicit loading forms when necessary. Consider testing with in-memory contexts to ensure code quality.

At Q2BSTUDIO we are a software development company expert in custom applications and custom software. We offer solutions that combine artificial intelligence and cybersecurity for companies that require robust and scalable products. Our team designs and implements AWS and Azure cloud services, integrating business intelligence services and Power BI for advanced visualizations. We develop AI solutions for companies, including custom AI agents that automate processes and improve decision-making. We also provide cybersecurity consulting to protect data architectures and applications, and managed services for cloud environments.

How Q2BSTUDIO can help with Entity Framework: we implement clean architectures using Code First, Model First, or Database First depending on the project, automate migrations and CI/CD pipelines, optimize LINQ queries, and design efficient DbContext contexts. We integrate EF with artificial intelligence solutions and cloud data services to create complete analytical platforms that include Power BI and business intelligence services.
