If you have started working with Terraform Cloud or Terraform Enterprise, you have probably come across something called Sentinel, the watchdog of your infrastructure deployments.
Sentinel acts as the security guard at the door of an exclusive club that represents your production environment: it validates that proposed changes comply with the rules before allowing their deployment.
Imagine that changes are guests: Sentinel not only checks their technical identity but also verifies whether they carry the correct tags, whether they belong to approved security groups, and whether they meet established compliance configurations. If they fail the check, they do not get in.
Why use Sentinel?
First, because it allows you to enforce rules before deployment. You can define policies as code to block EC2 instances without tags, prevent security rules open to 0.0.0.0 0 0, or any other condition you want to avoid. These policies run during the Terraform plan phase and can prevent an unsafe apply.
Second, it ensures consistent compliance across teams. By centralizing policies in sets that are linked to workspaces, you do not rely on individual memory or good practices: the same standards apply to any connected deployment.
Third, it prevents errors from reaching production. Errors such as open security groups or missing tags for cost allocation are detected in the plan, avoiding later rollback emails.
Policy enforcement modes: strict mandatory mode to block changes, soft mandatory mode that warns but allows override, and advisory mode that only logs non-compliance for audit and analysis.
How Sentinel fits into Terraform Cloud: the model is policies, policy sets, and workspaces. When a linked workspace runs a plan, Terraform Cloud evaluates the plan and Sentinel validates the changes against the policies in the set. Result: pass to apply or fail depending on the enforcement mode.
Things to consider: Sentinel is a paid feature available in the Team and Governance plan and above in Terraform Cloud. It only verifies resources managed by Terraform, so manual changes in the cloud console fall outside Sentinel's control; for runtime control, it is recommended to complement with services such as AWS Config or additional cybersecurity solutions.
Many organizations operate without Sentinel using open source workflows and good practices, but when compliance and guardrails are a priority, Sentinel provides a very valuable layer of security and governance.
