Since Mailtrap launched its own MCP server, Claude can not only generate emails for you but also send them directly to your recipients.
The integration is very simple, takes about 5 minutes, and works on both Windows and macOS.
Before you start, make sure to install the latest version of Node.js since Mailtrap MCP runs as a Node.js-based command-line utility. If you haven't already, install the Claude Desktop app or update to the latest version.
Open Claude Desktop, go to Settings, and in the Developer tab click Edit Config to locate the claude_desktop_config.json file.
Common locations for the claude_desktop_config.json file in case you need to open it directly: macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json Windows: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
Inside the claude_desktop_config.json file, add a new configuration for Mailtrap MCP. An example of the structure you can insert is the following: { mcpServers: { mailtrap: { command: npx, args: [-y, mcp-mailtrap], env: { MAILTRAP_API_TOKEN: your_mailtrap_api_token, DEFAULT_FROM_EMAIL: your_sender@example.com } } } }
To get the value of MAILTRAP_API_TOKEN, open your Mailtrap account and navigate to Sending Domains > Integration > API and copy the token from the credentials tab. Make sure DEFAULT_FROM_EMAIL uses a domain configured in Sending Domains in Mailtrap.
Save the configuration with the updated values and reload Claude Desktop. Upon reloading, you should see mailtrap MCP available in Claude's developer settings.
To use Mailtrap MCP and send emails, open a new conversation in Claude Desktop and select the configured MCP tool to allow Claude to perform external actions, for example sending emails with the send-email action. When Claude requests permission to use Mailtrap MCP, accept Allow for this chat to authorize its use in that conversation.
Example of a prompt to send a plain text email: Send an email to john.doe@example.com with the subject Hi John! and a message that wishes John a great day. Claude will process the prompt and execute the sending action using Mailtrap MCP, returning the properties of the sent message in the response.
To send an HTML email, specify in the prompt that the content must be formatted in HTML. For example: Send an email to john.doe@example.com with the subject Hi John! and a message that wishes John a great day. Make sure the message is nicely formatted by using HTML. Claude will include the html field with the corresponding email content.
To send an email to multiple recipients, indicate the addresses in the prompt. For example: Send an email to jackie@example.com and mike@example.com with a short greeting. Claude will add the additional recipients in cc or to as you specify in the prompt.
You can verify the sends by checking the Email Logs tab in the Mailtrap panel and use the Preview tab to see the HTML version of the message.
Tips and best practices: 1) Verify that the sender domain is validated in Mailtrap to avoid rejections. 2) Test first with development emails before sending to production. 3) If you send HTML, review the rendering in different clients using Mailtrap's preview.
