The latest version of the MariaDB Kubernetes Operator 25.08.0 is now available and brings relevant improvements in disaster recovery and adaptation to the demands of modern data-centric applications.
One of the most important new features is the introduction of the PhysicalBackup custom resources, which add support for physical backups in addition to traditional logical backups. Physical backups operate at the directory level and are much more efficient for large datasets, reducing restoration times and improving operations in production environments.
These physical backups have been implemented in two complementary ways. On the one hand, integration with the native mariadb-backup tool allows you to schedule backups, manage retention, apply compression, and store in S3-compatible destinations. Restoration is simplified by referencing the PhysicalBackup in the bootstrapFrom field of a new MariaDB resource, facilitating the preparation and restoration of files.
On the other hand, Kubernetes native capabilities are leveraged with VolumeSnapshots when the environment has compatible CSI drivers. Volume-level snapshots capture a consistent point-in-time copy and allow you to quickly provision new clusters from those storage backups.
Both options increase flexibility and allow you to drastically reduce recovery time objectives (RTO), a critical aspect in production environments where resilience and business continuity are priorities.
The Operator also includes default support for MariaDB 11.8 Community Server, which introduces the VECTOR data type. This advancement is key for artificial intelligence applications that handle high-dimensionality vectors, used in similarity searches and RAG flows. With the VECTOR type, vectors can be stored and manipulated directly in MariaDB, avoiding the complexity of deploying a dedicated vector database.
Recent integrations make it easier to use MariaDB as a vector store with popular frameworks, allowing you to build enterprise AI solutions and AI agents integrated with the existing relational data catalog.
To simplify deployments, the new mariadb-cluster Helm chart has been included, which automates the provisioning of the cluster and its Custom Resources managed by the Operator. This allows you to manage a complete MariaDB installation as a single Helm release, reducing configuration errors and accelerating reproducible deployments.
The enterprise version, MariaDB Enterprise Kubernetes Operator, offers support for critical environments, with Red Hat OpenShift certification and the use of secure Red Hat UBI base images, certificate lifecycle management, and advanced private key algorithms. It also manages both MariaDB Enterprise Server and MariaDB MaxScale for scalable and secure environments.
Additionally, this release incorporates improvements in replication, bringing that functionality closer to general availability, bug fixes, and a new calendar-based versioning scheme for greater clarity and predictability. The team keeps the roadmap open to feedback and encourages the community to participate on GitHub and in community channels.
