My first real startup: the rise and shutdown of CoLaunchly
I never thought I would write something like this, but here I am. This is the story of my first serious project as a founder, a tool called CoLaunchly that I built to help developers like me market their apps and keep them from dying in silence.
Why I built it: the aha moment came when I realized I am not the only developer who sucks at marketing. We create interesting apps and then they just sit there: no launch, no reach, no traction. GPT can help write tweets or Reddit posts, but it is messy, forgets details, and is not built for launching products. I thought of a tool designed to plan, write, and launch with structure. That is how CoLaunchly was born.
The development: I built the MVP alone in 1 or 2 weeks. Full stack with Next.js, Tailwind, Drizzle ORM, Neon DB, OpenAI, Kinde, Resend, and Stripe. Yes, I used a lot of shiny tools and maybe some overkill, but it let me iterate fast. Being a solo founder has advantages: zero meetings, total focus, clarity. It also means you do everything and fast, and that is exhausting.
Launch day: I did not have a solid strategy, so I posted everywhere and was even a bit spammy. Even so, it worked: fourth product of the day on Product Hunt, second in marketing of the week, over 300 users, and the first revenue. It was a rush and the feeling that it was working.
And then people disappeared: after a couple of months, reality set in. Many people signed up, played around with the tool, and did not come back. There was no community or recurring users, and I was left wondering why it did not catch on more. I wanted feedback and retention, and they did not come as I expected.
What worked and what flopped: project creation and content generation made sense, and the editorial calendar interface was clean. The biggest irony was the marketing: the product was a marketing tool, and even so, it did not reach enough people. I expected too much from passive growth and did not push hard enough.
Lessons learned: marketing has to be louder because a soft launch is usually a silent death. Building a community from scratch is extremely difficult. Being a solo founder is not the same as being a solo developer, and burnout shows up differently.
Burnout: I hit a wall. I could do 12-hour days developing, but being a founder drained me differently. I took two months off and am still partly on pause. I am adjusting my lifestyle: fewer energy drinks, more sleep, better eating, and sorting out priorities to avoid asking my body for more than it can give.
Is CoLaunchly dead? For now, kind of yes. I have ideas to revive it later, but I am not forcing it. I am focusing on other projects and on recovering, and it is okay to accept that pace.
If you are thinking about building something: do it. Even if it fails, even if no one comes back, even if you wear yourself out a bit, you will grow a lot and learn more than with any course. Try to validate before building, sell something before investing a lot of time, and do not expect magic. Everyone finds their style, and with experience you will discover yours.
