If you have been a web developer for some time, you know the email that appears a week after the launch of a large project. It starts with “Quick change” and asks you to move the logo to the right, make “Total” bold, and add a slogan in the footer. Suddenly your sprint derails, and instead of building the next great feature, you are digging through old code, fighting with a PDF generation library, or tweaking print styles, all to move a logo a few pixels.
That scenario reveals a huge gap in the industry. We build dynamic and flexible applications, but when it comes time to create a physical document, we fall back on rigid, hardcoded templates that turn developers into the bottleneck for every small business change.
I decided there had to be a better way, and AavanamKit was born. Instead of building invoices one by one, what if we built an invoice designer that users could manage themselves? AavanamKit is an open-source full-stack ecosystem designed to return the power of design to end users.
@aavanamkit/designer is an embeddable React component that offers a visual WYSIWYG studio where users can drag, drop, and link fields to application data. @aavanamkit/engine is a headless library for Node.js that takes the templates created by users and generates pixel-perfect documents on the server, in formats such as PDF.
There is a live demo available to try the designer without installation, ideal for quickly understanding the user experience and verifying how templates are saved as clean JSON that the backend can then process.
The workflow is simple and effective. First, you define your application’s data schema, which acts as a field dictionary. Second, you embed the designer in your admin panel and let your users create and save templates linked to that schema. Third, on the backend, you use the engine to combine the saved template with real data and generate the final document that you deliver to the client.
AavanamKit is an open-source project under the MIT license, born from real frustration and designed to save development teams hours of work. It is available on GitHub and has public documentation to facilitate its adoption.
