Introduction I started my programming journey in high school with Pascal, where the computer science teacher was very strict and demanded following the rules to the letter without leaving room for creativity. Later in university, I studied Java and C++, languages that at the time seemed very verbose and difficult to read.
Working in QA Automation After university, I landed a position as a QA Automation Engineer working with Selenium and Java. I was never very fond of Java and struggled to understand how Selenium interacted with that language and why it works that way.
Studying web development A few years later, I decided to learn web development and started with the most used technologies: HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I already had some experience with HTML and CSS from my QA work, but JavaScript was new to me. At first, it caught my attention because it was cleaner than Java, and as I discovered everything it allows you to do, I slowly fell in love with it.
Fundamentals and first achievements I didn't jump into building complex applications right away. I took the time to study the fundamentals: variables, loops, functions, and the DOM. My first small victories came when writing simple scripts that updated elements on an HTML page, changing text, showing or hiding content, and adding interactivity. Seeing those instant changes in the browser felt almost magical compared to previous experiences.
Turning point Once I mastered the basics, I started with Vue, and that opened up a new way of thinking about the user interface, component structure, state management, and writing cleaner, more maintainable code. Learning Node.js was the turning point that allowed me to use JavaScript on the backend as well, so I could tackle complete projects with a single language from start to finish.
Conclusion That gradual progression fundamentals -> simple scripts -> Vue -> Node.js allowed me to understand JavaScript deeply and not stay on the surface. JavaScript is fun to learn if you do it right, and that evolution took me from being someone focused on software testing to being the one who builds the software, which was my ultimate goal.
