Project Snowman is an IoT platform designed to measure and verify CO2 capture in real time, recording environmental impact directly at the source and solving the problem of data trust.
The main challenge was trust: how to verify that the numbers are correct without relying solely on a private database. To address this, we incorporated Web3 concepts that provide public and immutable records, so that every kilogram of captured CO2 is verifiable, unalterable, and auditable by third parties.
Simplified technical flow: IoT sensors measure CO2 levels and capture rates; the Snowman app validates, aggregates, and generates proofs; a Merkle root is calculated and its hash is written on-chain to ensure immutability; raw data is stored off-chain in databases or on IPFS, and only the proof is kept on-chain to maintain privacy and cost efficiency.
Impact economy: Snow Credits implemented as an ERC-20 token with an admin-controlled minter role to reward verified impact; Snow Badges as ERC-1155 serve to mark milestones and can be configured as soulbound for certain categories; EIP-2981-style royalty rules can be added for creators or associated initiatives.
Integration and user experience: wallet connection is managed with modern libraries such as wagmi and RainbowKit for a fast experience; ERC-4337 smart wallets are being evaluated to enable gasless claims; within the app, a swap is integrated using aggregators like 0x or Uniswap v3 pools to convert Snow Credits into assets such as USDC or WETH on low-cost networks like Polygon or Base.
Architecture notes: do not put raw IoT data on-chain; store redacted summaries and their CID on IPFS or in protected storage; generate SHA-256 hashes and use Merkle roots to allow lightweight public auditing; register on-chain objects like periodId, wallet, cid, and hash for each reporting period.
Why it matters for developers: the architecture is modular and chain-agnostic, replicable for any IoT proof-reward flow, whether emissions, renewable generation, or supply chain events. The key is to keep transactions lightweight and private by storing only proofs on-chain.
