Tiramisu significantly boosts realism: approximately 3 times the contrast of Quest 3, 90 pixels per degree of vision, equivalent to 3.6 times the angular resolution of Quest 3, and peak brightness of up to 1400 nits. The technical cost of these improvements is a bulkier and heavier design and a still limited field of view, but it represents a major leap in visual quality for applications requiring precision and detail.
At the opposite end is Boba 3 and its Boba 3 VR version, which bet on an ultra-panoramic field of view of 180 degrees by 120 degrees, closer to human perception, with 4K×4K screens per eye. These prototypes use screens designed for mass production and lenses similar to those of Quest 3, suggesting that many of these ideas could reach commercial devices if design trade-offs are resolved.
Both prototypes serve as test beds: they show what is possible with high-density displays, greater contrast, and ultrawide screens, while Meta clarifies that these research designs may not reach stores as-is. Even so, they are a window into where the mixed reality industry is heading and what technological opportunities it will open for businesses and developers.
