EIP-4844, known as Proto-Danksharding, represents a significant change in Ethereum's scalability roadmap by introducing temporary data storage in the form of blobs and a new multidimensional fee market that reduces publication costs for rollups.

In practice, the proposal notably reduces data fees for rollups but also increases the propagation size of slots, which poses potential risks to consensus stability and fairness among validators.

This empirical analysis examines four key areas: synchronization times, effects on rollup transaction patterns, delays for users, and the dynamics of blob gas fees. The results show that although rollups enjoy a substantial drop in costs per published data, there are secondary impacts that require active monitoring.

Regarding synchronization, full clients observe increases in the time needed to process and propagate new blocks due to the larger slot size. This can translate into longer reorganization windows and the need for optimizations in node implementations to preserve consensus stability.

Rollup transaction patterns shift toward greater data aggregation in blobs, taking advantage of lower fees for batch operations. However, this higher data density per slot can generate congestion spikes at specific times and cause variability in transaction inclusion latency.

For end users, the observed delays are heterogeneous. In normal scenarios, rollup transactions are settled more cheaply, but in episodes of high demand, latency can increase due to competition for blob space. The practical result is a net improvement in cost but with the need for new prioritization strategies and user interfaces that manage confirmation time expectations.

The dynamics of blob gas fees introduce a multidimensional market where validators and rollup aggregators negotiate between cost and priority. This favors off-chain solutions and data compaction optimizations but requires governance and monitoring mechanisms to avoid distortions that affect the level playing field among nodes and ecosystem participants.

In summary, Proto-Danksharding offers clear benefits in cost reduction for rollups and is a crucial step toward a more scalable Ethereum. However, it brings technical challenges in synchronization, consensus stability, and fair distribution of advantage among validators. Improvements in clients, optimizations in propagation pipelines, and observability tools are recommended to mitigate risks.
