Abstraction in object-oriented programming consists of simplifying complex systems by modeling classes based on essential characteristics and hiding unnecessary details from the user or consumer of the class.

A simple analogy: someone who buys a car does not need to know how to repair it; that is abstracted to the mechanic. The mechanic does not need to know how to design it; that is abstracted to the engineers. Each role interacts with a simplified interface that hides the internal implementation.

In OOP code terms, the idea is to create a base class Vehicle that encapsulates common behavior such as accelerating and braking and keeps internal details like speed. Then a Car class inherits from Vehicle and adds concrete attributes such as doors and color. A specific car model inherits from Car, and a component responsible for creating instances can simply instantiate that model and call methods like accelerate without worrying about internal physics or movement calculations. Thanks to abstraction, a new car model can be added without rewriting the movement logic.
