In past decades, when conditions were harsh and hardware was scarce, computing pioneers knew exactly where every bit went and optimized every cycle because computing was extremely expensive.
For example, the Apollo lunar module guidance computer had approximately 72 KB of fixed core rope memory for program code and about 4 KB of erasable RAM for variables and temporary space. The Voyager probes, launched in 1977 and still operational, run on equally meager resources: the command system had 2 KB of RAM and about 4 KB of ROM, the flight data subsystem 8 KB of RAM and 8 KB of ROM, and the attitude control system 2 KB of RAM and 8 KB of ROM. That was the reality: no excess, no room for carelessness, precision was a matter of survival.
Today, every component of a React interface or Node.js package can weigh 10 KB or more. Language models generate endless SELECT queries, poor password handling practices, and clumsy solutions, and somehow applications still work. Some investors celebrate code bloat and speed over quality, encouraging developers who produce thousands of lines without a solid foundation.
This is not the first time this cycle has occurred. In my generation, veteran developers built engines in PHP, Perl, or Python from scratch, while newcomers merely used content managers and extensions without knowing what was under the hood. In the 80s, C programmers managed memory manually and criticized C++ and object-oriented programming as unnecessary abstractions. In the 60s, assembly experts looked down on FORTRAN and COBOL, believing a compiler could not optimize better than they could. The pattern repeats.
What does not change is the foundation, the technical groundwork. That is the solid rock on which good solutions rest. Learning the fundamentals, delving into how things work, and understanding the limits of hardware and software turns the professional into a creator, not merely a consumer of tools.
Blindly trusting language models without understanding the essence of the system is a dangerous bet. Those who sell the idea that artificial intelligence will replace the engineer are selling a self-serving narrative. CEOs, corporations, and investors who promote technical ignorance do so for control and profit, and they usually have no ethical brakes.
Think of language models as a drug that gives the illusion of power. They can speed up specific tasks and offer timely assistance, but if you delegate all knowledge to them, you will end up with fragile solutions and no real intellectual property.
PS I use language models for what they truly contribute: small scripts, simple examples, support in testing and documentation, help in learning, routine reviews, and spell checking. I do not use them as a substitute for solid engineering or for critical projects or legacy code without expert supervision.
