A report from web application security specialists states that the company responsible for developing TeamViewer, the popular remote control software for systems, was a victim of hacking.
According to reports, the attackers could control any computer logged into this service to carry out arbitrary activities.
The report reveals that TeamViewer was hacked in 2016, an incident that led to the theft of financial information from many users in just 24 hours.
Christopher Glyer, a researcher at the security firm FireEye, revealed the incident via Twitter, also stating that users' passwords are being leaked. According to this firm, the hacking incident is the responsibility of the APT41 group, which operates from Asia, specifically from China, and has been linked to multiple high-profile malicious hacking operations.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time TeamViewer has been a victim of threat actors. Approximately four years ago, web application security specialists from the International Institute of Cyber Security (IICS) reported that a group of hackers managed to install a backdoor in various TeamViewer implementations to extract confidential information.
A continuous security policy, recurring pentesting, and greater investment in security areas would largely prevent all these types of threats. Technology companies and those that rely on technology for their evolution must take security into account and understand the consequences of not ensuring that their site or application is secure.
