Recently, the PPTArena benchmark has emerged as a pioneering tool for evaluating artificial intelligence agents capable of performing complex modifications on real slides based on textual instructions. With over 1,300 human-curated edits spread across 2,125 slides, this repository ranges from text and graphic adjustments to animations and professional master styles. Agents are scored by two vision-language models (VLMs): one measures instruction compliance through structural differences, and the other evaluates the visual quality of the resulting slides.
In this context, the PPTPilot agent has demonstrated superior performance by planning semantic editing sequences, alternating between programmatic tools and deterministic XML operations, and verifying each step in an iterative plan-edit-verify loop. It outperforms other VLM-based agents by more than ten percentage points in composite, design-sensitive edits spanning multiple slides. However, all current agents struggle with long-range tasks at the full-document scale, highlighting the difficulty of achieving reliable PowerPoint editing.
