Empty metric: why testnet numbers don't mean success

In the Web3 ecosystem, a statistic repeats with unsettling regularity: 88% of airdrops fail within the first months after launch. Behind this data is not simple bad luck, but a chain of distortions that begins long before the token genesis. Projects that boast hundreds of thousands of wallets on testnet, founding teams that present those numbers as proof of traction, and venture capitalists who accept them without question. To understand why eight out of ten airdrops end in freefall, you have to look beyond the headlines and analyze the real incentives operating beneath the surface.

The mechanics are well-known: a blockchain or protocol launches a testnet, offers points or future rewards in exchange for interactions, and the metrics skyrocket. Another study covering more than 20 billion dollars in distributions since 2017 confirmed the same figure. The question the industry avoids is: why do we keep repeating the pattern?

The answer lies in the distortion of incentives. On a testnet, tokens have no real value or significant gas cost. The only incentive is the promise of a future airdrop. This attracts a user profile that is not looking for a product, but for extraction. These are accounts that replicate transactions, bridge assets between networks, and simulate organic activity with automated tools. The problem is aggravated by Sybil attacks: one person creates hundreds or thousands of addresses to maximize their reward. The most documented case is LayerZero, where out of six million supposedly active addresses, its CEO estimated that only between 400,000 and 600,000 corresponded to real users. More than 800,000 were identified as confirmed Sybils. Other projects like Optimism, zkSync, or Linea also had to massively clean their lists, effectively admitting that the testnet numbers were fiction.

Beyond Sybils, there is an even more subtle phenomenon: mercenary participation. These are real users with real wallets who interact exclusively for the expectation of obtaining tokens and sell them immediately after the airdrop. The data after the zkSync launch is devastating: its number of active addresses fell by 85% in five months, and its total value locked (TVL) dropped almost 40% after the token announcement. The community that seemed vibrant turned out to be a stage set sustained by temporary incentives. When these disappear, so do the users, leaving an empty protocol, an inflated valuation, and a token in freefall.

The real cost of this illusion is not just financial. Investors who accepted testnet metrics as signals of genuine demand end up backing projects with valuations completely disconnected from reality. The definitive test every founder should ask themselves is: 'if we turned off all points, airdrops, and yields tomorrow, what usage would remain?'. If the honest answer is 'almost zero', that is the real starting point. Unfortunately, few teams dare to carry out this reflection because it would mean questioning their own fundraising metrics. The result is a cycle where capital is allocated based on false traction, tokens are launched with extremely high valuations (FDV), and real demand cannot sustain the price.
