Accurate transcription of multiple instruments to MIDI

The music industry is going through a quiet revolution driven by artificial intelligence models that understand sound like never before. Until recently, extracting a MIDI score from a recording of multiple instruments was a task reserved for laboratories with enormous resources. Kyutai, in collaboration with Mirelo, has presented MuScriptor, an open model that promises to change that reality. This decoder-only Transformer, trained on more than 170,000 real recordings, is capable of transcribing complex mixes into musical symbols with an accuracy that significantly exceeds previous systems. Beyond technical advancement, MuScriptor opens up possibilities ranging from music production to computational musicology, including educational and audio analysis applications. In this article, we explore how it works, what its architecture entails, and how this technology can be integrated into business and software development projects.

To understand the qualitative leap, it is useful to stop at the design of the model. MuScriptor processes the audio in short segments – about five seconds – using a mel-spectrogram, which is then read by an autoregressive Transformer. Output is MIDI-like tokens that encode pitch, duration, start, and instrument. Basically, transcription becomes a language modeling task, following the MT3 tokenization scheme. The team has released three variants of the model – 103 million, 307 million and 1,400 million parameters – with weights under the CC BY-NC 4.0 license, which limits commercial use but allows academic and personal experimentation. The inference code, on the other hand, is licensed by MIT, facilitating integration into open source projects. The real innovation, however, is not only in the architecture but in the data. The training was carried out in three phases: pre-training with 1.45 million MIDI files synthesized in real time; tuning with 170,000 real recordings totaling more than 11,000 hours of audio with aligned annotations; and a post-training through reinforcement learning (similar to GRPO) with 300 manually verified tracks. The result: a 48.2 percent improvement in F1 multi compared to 21.9 in YourMT3+, the previous standard.

From a technical perspective, the use of a three-stage pipeline is no coincidence. The synthetic phase provides a broad and controlled base, but the real magic happens with the actual data. The annotations were aligned using audio-symbol synchronization techniques, using interpolation and dynamic temporal warping, filtering out low-quality pairs. Subsequent reinforcement, where the model learns to maximize a reward that combines onset, frame, and offset F1 scores, reduces false negatives and improves temporal accuracy. In crossover tests, such as the Dagstuhl ChoirSet set, the frame F1 jumped from 51.0 to 80.7. However, the model still has limitations: the tokenizer does not capture velocity or represent overlapping notes of the same pitch and instrument, and accuracy in styles such as choral music remains low. In addition, the large size requires GPUs for practical operation, and the five-second window limits the long-term context.

Beyond the numbers, what's interesting is how this technology can be integrated into real workflows. A producer can extract a bass line from a mix and reassign it to another synthesizer; a musicologist can convert historical recordings into editable scores; A developer can build an educational tool that displays a piano roll in real-time. And this is where companies like Q2BSTUDIO can make a difference. From developing custom applications to integrate MuScriptor into professional environments, to implementing AI systems for companies that automate audio analysis, to creating power bi dashboards that visualize transcription metrics, the possibilities are vast. You can also think of AI agents that, trained with this model, offer transcription services on demand, or tailor-made application solutions for sectors such as audiovisual production or music therapy.

In the enterprise environment, MuScriptor integration requires considering aspects such as scalability in the cloud. To process large volumes of audio, it is advisable to deploy the model in cloud infrastructures, either with AWS and Azure cloud services that allow distributed inference. Q2BSTUDIO offers consulting in this area, including data pipeline optimization and cost management. In addition, the security of audio data – especially if it is copyrighted recordings or sensitive information – must be addressed with robust cybersecurity measures. On the other hand, business intelligence can benefit from the metadata extracted: harmonic patterns, tempo, instrumentation, which feed dashboards of business intelligence services for strategic decision-making in studios, record labels or streaming platforms.

MuScriptor represents a significant advancement in automatic music transcription, but its true potential will be unlocked when integrated into broader software ecosystems. The combination of open models with professional development services, cloud, and data analytics can transform the way we interact with music audio. Whether it's building a composition assistant, a musicological analysis tool, or an automatic labeling system, the key is knowing how to orchestrate cutting-edge technology with bespoke software. At Q2BSTUDIO, we work so that companies of all types can take advantage of these advances, from conception to production, with multidisciplinary teams and experience in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and digital transformation. If you're thinking about applying MuScriptor or any other AI technology in your organization, the journey starts with understanding your data and context. And we are there to accompany you.
