TSMC: From promise to reality in its US fabs

TSMC's announcement to invest 265,000 million dollars in the construction of twelve factories in the United States has generated a huge stir in the technology industry. However, beyond the spectacular figures and headlines, it is worth asking whether this promise will materialise or if it is simply a declaration of intent. The history of large semiconductor projects is full of ambitious plans that have been left halfway, delayed or cancelled. The first went into production at the end of 2024, and the second, which will use 3nm technology, will not be ready until the second half of 2025. The third, announced in spring 2024, will not start until the end of the decade, according to its own documents.

Now TSMC says it will add another 100,000 million for four more plants, but in the last conference with investors its CEO, CC Wei, acknowledged that there is no firm timeline: 'it depends on the market situation'. This ambiguity contrasts with the urgency of the market, especially due to the demand for artificial intelligence that has skyrocketed its quarterly revenues above 40,000 million. However, the problem is not only financial, but also talent. A report by McKinsey and SEMI projects a shortage of 157,000 skilled workers by the time the third factory is operational. Each plant needs thousands of specialized engineers and technicians that simply do not exist in today's job market.

This scenario illustrates a broader lesson: the promises of physical infrastructure are complex and slow, especially in sectors as specialized as semiconductors.
