Alianza estratégica por 2 GW de capacidad con aceleradores AMD

AMD has announced an investment of up to $5 billion in Anthropic, the creator of Claude, as part of an infrastructure agreement covering tens of billions of dollars’ worth of AI systems. The partnership will allow Anthropic to deploy up to two gigawatts of capacity using AMD Instinct MI450-series accelerators, with the first gigawatt operational in the first half of 2027. AMD’s investment is tied to meeting deployment milestones, though the specific conditions have not been disclosed. This transaction combines a direct equity commitment from AMD with a massive hardware order from Anthropic under separate parts of the agreement.

The news reinforces AMD’s strategy to compete with Nvidia in the AI chip market. AMD previously signed similar agreements with OpenAI — for up to six gigawatts — and with Meta, also for six gigawatts. In those cases, the companies received warrants to acquire AMD shares upon meeting certain deployment and stock performance targets. With Anthropic, the approach is different: AMD makes a direct investment, and the full amount is subject to Anthropic meeting the installation deadlines for Helios systems.

The Helios systems include MI455X GPUs from the Instinct MI450 series, EPYC “Venice” processors, Pensando networking, and ROCm software. It is an integrated rack-scale platform, not just standalone GPUs. Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, stated: “We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Anthropic and deploy AMD Helios at gigawatt scale.” She noted that both companies intend to make Helios the reference platform for future AI infrastructure deployments.

Anthropic already uses AMD’s earlier MI355X accelerators and now adds this new two-gigawatt commitment. To put it in perspective, two gigawatts equal 2,000 megawatts of power capacity. According to AMD executives, developing one gigawatt of AI computing infrastructure can cost tens of billions of dollars, depending on equipment and facilities. Anthropic has also secured more than 300 megawatts through SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, which houses over 220,000 Nvidia GPUs.

Founded by Dario Amodei, Anthropic maintains a multi-supplier strategy. In addition to AMD, Anthropic collaborates with Amazon (Trainium), Google (TPU), and Nvidia. Indeed, Amazon remains its primary cloud and training partner: Anthropic has secured up to five gigawatts of capacity with AWS and uses more than one million Trainium2 processors, with plans to adopt Trainium3 in 2026. It has also closed agreements with Google and Broadcom for multiple gigawatts of next-generation TPU capacity, with deployments starting in 2027.

Tom Brown, co-founder and chief compute officer at Anthropic, explained: “Running across a diversified range of hardware lets us map the right workloads to the right hardware.” Brown said the AMD partnership will provide additional capacity and allow the companies to optimize systems for training and serving Claude. “Access to compute is central to keeping Claude at the frontier and meeting demand from our customers,” he added.

From a business perspective, this move by AMD demonstrates its commitment to investments tied to hardware orders to secure long-term revenue. AMD shares rose 2.4% after the announcement, and the stock has more than doubled since the start of the year. Analysts believe such deals strengthen AMD’s position against Nvidia, which has also held talks to invest up to $30 billion in OpenAI.

The impact on the software development ecosystem is notable. Companies building AI-powered applications, such as those offered by Q2BSTUDIO, can benefit from the growing availability of diverse hardware and optimized platforms. Q2BSTUDIO specializes in custom software that integrates artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and cloud (AWS/Azure), as well as Business Intelligence solutions using Power BI. The company also develops AI agents that automate business processes, and its cloud expertise enables clients to deploy language models like Claude securely and at scale.

Anthropic’s focus on diversifying its infrastructure has direct implications for the data center market. The flexibility to choose between AMD GPUs, Nvidia GPUs, Google TPUs, or Amazon Trainium reduces dependency on a single vendor and opens opportunities for software companies that offer cloud migration and optimization services. Q2BSTUDIO, for instance, helps clients select the most suitable cloud platform — Azure or AWS — and implement advanced cybersecurity measures to protect data and trained models.

Another relevant aspect is the technical collaboration between AMD and Anthropic to optimize Claude’s performance on Instinct accelerators. The agreement includes a multi-year engineering program in which Anthropic adapts Claude workloads to AMD’s hardware and software, while AMD uses Claude internally in its product teams. This feedback accelerates the maturity of the ROCm platform, which directly competes with Nvidia’s CUDA.

In summary, AMD’s $5 billion investment in Anthropic is not just a financial move but a strategic alliance that redefines how large-scale AI infrastructure is built. The combination of open hardware, collaborative software, and a multi-vendor vision paves the way for a new generation of intelligent applications. Companies like Q2BSTUDIO, which integrate AI, cloud, cybersecurity, and BI into custom solutions, are perfectly positioned to leverage these trends and deliver value to their clients in an increasingly competitive market.
