Its goal is not to build another chatbot or a smarter voice assistant, but to create the physical layer that allows humans to say 'yes' or 'no' to AI proposals instantly and without friction.
The concept stems from a simple yet powerful observation: every day we perform hundreds of small digital tasks —unlocking the phone, opening an app, waiting for it to load, typing what the device already knows we were going to type— and on each one we pay an invisible toll in lost seconds and cognitive load. Aina calls that toll 'the last great frontier of consumer hardware.' While software advances by leaps and bounds —AI models generate films, agents automate entire meetings— the physical interface we use to give commands remains anchored to the 1868 keyboard and the 2007 touchscreen.
Aina's bet is that, in the age of AI agents, the only relevant human task will be to approve or reject actions that machines have already anticipated. All these companies tried to replace the smartphone with a worse device. Instead, Aina does not compete with the phone: it complements it. Its architecture relies on existing operating systems —macOS, iOS— to read context and offer intelligent actions, but without intending to replace the screen or the current ecosystem.
Behind this strategy there is a team with real experience in consumer hardware. Apoorv Shankar, founder and CEO of Aina, was VP of Hardware at Ultrahuman, the Indian company that makes smart rings and managed to multiply its revenue 5.4 times in one year, swinging from losses to profit while competing with Finnish giant Oura. That operational background —designing, manufacturing, and scaling hardware globally from India— is exactly what was missing in previous failures, led by brilliant software designers who learned manufacturing at the investors' expense.
But Aina's opportunity is not limited to a desktop keypad. If AI agents become the dominant way to perform tasks —booking a cab, scheduling a meeting, ordering food— whoever owns the physical instrument for giving the go-ahead will sit in the flow of every digital transaction. It is the same logic that turned the mouse into the Trojan horse of the graphical interface, and the touchscreen into the foundation of the iPhone empire. History shows that companies that understood a peripheral was actually a claim on the human interaction layer captured value for decades.
