Peter G. Neumann, one of the most influential names in the history of computing and cybersecurity, died on May 17 at the age of 93. His legacy, built over nearly seven decades, encompasses not only fundamental technical innovations but also a way of thinking that anticipated the risks of the digital age long before they became global crises. Neumann was born in New York City in 1932. His mathematics education at Harvard allowed him to be part of the first generation of university programmers. A conversation with Albert Einstein in 1952 shaped his approach: simplicity in design as a guiding principle. After earning a doctorate in Darmstadt (Germany) and a second doctorate at Harvard, he joined Bell Labs, where he worked on error-correcting codes and survivable communications. There he contributed to the development of Multics, a time-sharing operating system that laid the foundation for modern secure architectures. He designed its file system with hierarchical directories, access control lists, and segmented virtual memory, and also contributed to the design of its input/output system.

In 1970 he joined SRI, where he made seminal contributions. The Provably Secure Operating System (PSOS) project demonstrated that security could be designed from the start, not added later. Together with Dorothy Denning, he developed the Intrusion Detection Expert System (IDES), a precursor to modern cyber defenses. He led the CHERI project (Capability Hardware-Enhanced RISC Instructions), now commercialized by an international alliance, which integrates security into hardware. He was also a pioneer in analyzing election integrity, pointing out vulnerabilities in electronic systems and advocating for transparency and public auditing. His systemic approach to risk encompassed human factors, governance failures, social consequences, and misuse of automation.

One of his most enduring creations was the ACM Risks Forum (Forum on Risks to the Public in Computers and Related Systems), which he moderated for 41 years until April 2025. This forum became an academic archive of lessons on computer failures, vulnerabilities, and emerging threats. In 1995 he published the book 'Computer-Related Risks', a practical guide on how and why systems fail. Neumann insisted that recurring failures were not unfortunate accidents but predictable consequences of how systems are built and sold. His core message: security must be a systemic property, not a technical patch. He warned that uncontrolled complexity is itself a source of risk.

Today, in a world dominated by artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and autonomous systems, Neumann's warnings are more relevant than ever. Companies integrating AI into their processes must understand that models are not infallible and require human oversight. Cybersecurity is no longer optional; it is a strategic pillar. As Whitfield Diffie, co-inventor of public-key cryptography, said, Neumann was 'one of the last of the old guard and a pointer to the future.'
