What are intervals
An interval is the distance between two notes. For example, C to E is a major third and E to G is a minor third. Each interval has a characteristic sound and a shape on the guitar.
Basic music theory concepts you should know before
1 semitone = 1 fret. 1 tone = 2 frets. Musical alphabet: A B C D E F G. Enharmonic notes: C# = Db, D# = Eb, etc. Major scale formula: W W H W W W H (W = tone, H = semitone).
Common intervals to memorize
Perfect unison: 0 semitones, C to C, same sound.
Minor second: 1 semitone, C to Db, very tense.
Major second: 2 semitones, C to D, simple step.
Minor third: 3 semitones, C to Eb, sad or somber sound.
Major third: 4 semitones, C to E, happy sound.
Perfect fourth: 5 semitones, C to F, feeling of suspension.
Tritone: 6 semitones, C to F#, dissonant or unsettling.
Perfect fifth: 7 semitones, C to G, strong and stable sound.
Minor sixth: 8 semitones, C to Ab, warm and melancholic.
Major sixth: 9 semitones, C to A, sweet.
Minor seventh: 10 semitones, C to Bb, jazzy and tense.
Major seventh: 11 semitones, C to B, dreamy and directional.
Octave: 12 semitones, C to C, same pitch class.
Interval shapes on the guitar starting from the sixth string E or the fifth string A
Root plus major second: move forward 2 frets on the same string.
Root plus major third: go down one string and move back 1 fret (diagonal).
Root plus perfect fifth: go down one string and move forward 2 frets (power chord).
Root plus octave: go down two strings and move forward 2 frets.
How to practice intervals daily routine
1 Learn the shapes on a single string: choose a root note, for example G, and play G to A (2M), G to B (3M), G to C (4P), ascending and descending.
2 Sing the intervals out loud: play and say G to B Major third to train your ear.
3 Practice within a scale: in C major C D E F G A B C try jumps like C to E (3M), D to F (3m), E to G (3m).
4 Apply to chords: major chord = root + 3M + 5P, minor chord = root + 3m + 5P.
5 Improvise with intervals: choose two intervals, for example 3M and 5P, and create short melodic phrases.
Learn to recognize intervals using songs
Minor second: Jaws theme. Major second: Happy Birthday. Minor third: Greensleeves. Major third: When the Saints Go Marching In. Perfect fourth: Here Comes the Bride. Tritone: The Simpsons theme. Perfect fifth: Star Wars theme. Octave: Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
Why C to E is a third and not a fourth
Intervals are counted by letter names, not just by number of frets. C to E involves C D E = three names, therefore it is a 3rd. Counting semitones C C# D D# E are 4 semitones, and 4 semitones equal a major third.
Why not rely only on frets
The fret count indicates semitones, which determine the quality of the interval (major, minor, perfect), while letter names determine the number (2nd, 3rd, 4th). For example, C to E is 4 semitones = major 3rd; C to F is 5 semitones = perfect 4th. Although the difference in frets between E and F is one semitone, they belong to different interval classes.
Reference of the C major scale
C distance 0 unison 0 semitones. D major second 2 semitones. E major third 4 semitones. F perfect fourth 5 semitones. G perfect fifth 7 semitones. A major sixth 9 semitones. B major seventh 11 semitones. C octave 12 semitones.
On the fretboard
Note C on the 8th fret of the sixth string. Note E on the 12th fret, 4 frets higher, that is 4 semitones = major third.
Summary
Semitones define the quality of the interval (major, minor, perfect). Letter names define the number of the interval (2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.).
