INTERVALS ON THE GUITAR: what they are and how to learn them
Definition - An interval is the distance between two notes. Each interval has a characteristic sound and a shape on the guitar fretboard.
Examples - C to E = Major third; E to G = Minor third.
Basic theory concepts - 1 semitone = 1 fret. 1 tone = 2 frets. Musical alphabet A B C D E F G. Enharmonic notes C# = Db, D# = Eb. Major scale formula W W H W W W H where W is tone and H is semitone.
Common intervals - Perfect unison 0 semitones C - C same sound. Minor second 1 semitone C - Db very tense. Major second 2 semitones C - D ascending step. Minor third 3 semitones C - Eb sad sound. Major third 4 semitones C - E happy sound. Perfect fourth 5 semitones C - F suspenseful feeling. Tritone 6 semitones C - F# dissonant. Perfect fifth 7 semitones C - G powerful. Minor sixth 8 semitones C - Ab warm and sad. Major sixth 9 semitones C - A sweet. Minor seventh 10 semitones C - Bb jazzy. Major seventh 11 semitones C - B leading. Octave 12 semitones C - C same pitch class.
Shapes on the guitar starting from the 6th string E or 5th string A - Root to major second: 2 frets forward on the same string. Root to major third: one string down and one fret back diagonally. Root to perfect fifth: one string down and 2 frets forward power chord shape. Root to octave: two strings down and 2 frets forward.
Daily practice routine - 1 Learn the shapes on a single string: choose a root note and play M2, M3, P4, etc., ascending and descending. 2 Sing the intervals aloud while you play to train your ear. 3 Practice within a scale: for example C major scale C D E F G A B C and make jumps like C to E (M3). 4 Apply to chords: major chord = root + M3 + P5; minor chord = root + m3 + P5. 5 Improvise with intervals: choose 2 intervals like M3 and P5 and create short melodic phrases.

Why C to E is a major third and not a fourth - Intervals are named by letters, not just by number of frets. C D E are three letter names so it is a third. Counting semitones C C# D D# E are 4 semitones, and 4 semitones correspond to a major third.
Why not rely only on frets - The fret count gives semitones that define the quality of the interval major minor or perfect, but the interval class 2nd 3rd 4th comes from the note letters. Example C to E = 4 semitones = major third; C to F = 5 semitones = perfect fourth. Although they differ by only one fret they are different intervals.
C major scale reference - C 0 Unison. D 2 Major second. E 4 Major third. F 5 Perfect fourth. G 7 Perfect fifth. A 9 Major sixth. B 11 Major seventh. C 12 Octave.
Example on the fretboard - C on 6th string 8th fret. E on the same string or on the 6th at 12th fret is 4 frets higher than C, that is 4 semitones = major third.
Summary - Semitones define the quality of the interval major, minor or perfect. Letter names define the interval number 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. Practicing shapes on the fretboard, singing intervals and applying to chords and improvisation accelerates learning.
