Deploy and Configure Windows Server 2022 in Azure

A Windows Server virtual machine in Microsoft Azure is a virtual server that runs in the Microsoft cloud and offers the same capabilities as a physical server without the need to purchase or maintain hardware, allowing you to deploy applications, host websites, store data, run tests, and extend existing infrastructures with pay-as-you-go billing and high flexibility.

Key advantages include selection of size and resources such as CPU, RAM, and storage, managed SSD or HDD disks, availability options with zones for high resilience, automatic scaling with Virtual Machine Scale Sets, and license savings with Azure Hybrid Benefit.

Minimum prerequisites for this lab: global administrator permissions on the Azure subscription and access to the portal portal.azure.com.

Step 1 create a resource group: in the Azure portal use the search bar to locate Resource Groups, select Create, choose the subscription, enter the name rg-alpha, select the East US region or the region you prefer, choose Review + Create, and finally Create.

Step 2 create a security group in Entra ID: in the portal search for Azure Active Directory or Entra ID, select Default Directory, navigate to Groups, choose New Group, and create a group of type Security with the name App Log Examiners and description App Log Examiners, then press Create.

Step 3 deploy the WS-VM1 virtual machine: in the search bar look for Virtual Machines, select Create, Azure Virtual Machine, in the Basics tab complete the following values Subscription your subscription, Resource Group rg-alpha, Virtual machine name WS-VM1, Region East US or the chosen region, Availability options No infrastructure redundancy required, Security type Standard, Image Windows Server 2022 Datacenter Azure Edition x64 Gen2, Size Standard_D4s_v3 4 vcpus 16 GiB memory, Administrator account prime, Password P@ssw0rdP@ssw0rd, Inbound ports RDP 3389, choose Review + Create and Create, wait for the deployment to finish and select Go to resource.

Step 4 configure network and security rules: on the WS-VM1 page choose Networking, select the RDP rule, change the Source to My IP address and save; this restricts inbound RDP connections to your current IP address; then choose Add inbound port rule and create a rule with Source Any, Source port ranges *, Destination Any, Service HTTP, Action Allow, Priority 310, Name AllowAnyHTTPInbound to allow HTTP web traffic to the VM.

Step 5 connect via remote desktop: on the WS-VM1 page choose Connect, under Native RDP select Download RDP file, open the file, start Remote Desktop Connection, enter the user prime and the defined secure password, and connect.

Step 6 install web server role and content: when logging in with administrator privileges, run Windows PowerShell Admin and run Install-WindowsFeature Web-Server -IncludeAllSubFeature -IncludeManagementTools, then change to the web server directory with cd c:\inetpub\wwwroot\ and download a sample file with Invoke-WebRequest -Uri https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Azure-Samples/html-docs-hello-world/master/index.html -OutFile index.html or use wget if available.

Step 7 adjust disks and storage: to resize a disk from the portal, go to the Disks section of the VM, select the operating system disk, modify the disk size and type, apply the changes, then inside the VM open diskmgmt.msc, initialize and extend the partition so the system recognizes the new capacity.

Step 8 change machine size and RAM memory: stop the VM from the portal using Stop or Deallocate, in Size select the desired family and size, for example to increase RAM choose a size with more memory, and then Start to restart the VM.

Step 9 public IP address management: to dissociate a public IP, go to the network interface in the portal and dissociate or delete the public IP when necessary, and to associate it again edit the public IP configuration and bind it to the VM's network interface.

Step 10 test connection and web service: get the public IP from the Overview page of WS-VM1 and open https://the_public_ip in a browser to verify that the downloaded index.html page is served correctly; you can also ping or use remote checking tools.

Good security practices: use strong passwords and multi-factor authentication, protect administrative ports by restricting IPs, apply automatic Windows updates, enable Trusted Launch or similar features for secure boot, and configure Network Security Groups with the minimum necessary rules.

Administration and monitoring: manage your VMs from the Azure portal or with tools such as Azure PowerShell and Azure CLI, configure alerts and metrics, monitor with Azure Monitor, configure backups with Azure Backup, and apply tags for cost management and organization.

Common use cases: development and testing environments, deployment of applications and databases, extensions of on-premises networks to the cloud, and hosting of internal or public applications, all with scalability and cost control.
